The original Sikh pilgrimage site, GOINDVAL, was chosen by their founder, Guru Amar Das. The old east-west roadway actually crossed the River Beas at this location. This ferry station became a major transportation hub after Sher Shalh Suri, the Afghan king of north India (1540–1545), renovated the roadway. Due to this, a Marvaha Khatri trader named Goinda or Gonda planned to build a settlement at the western end of the ferry. After experiencing natural disasters that Goinda blamed on demonic forces, he returned to Khadur to ask Guru Angad for his blessing. To assist Goinda, the Guru sent (Guru) Amar Das, his loyal student. Amar Das, who had been transporting river water, was quite familiar with that route.
